I thinks the story would have been better if they had Raya lose in the spine battle and the dragon not appearing to have a low point scene, rather than an action scene with no purpose plotwise other than frustrating her rival and revealing the dragon. The dragon does receive character growth, even after almost dying. The beautiful environments aren't developed and explored for time's sake.
